running things… apparently there are some people who think running 21 kilometers is a good time. since i know one those folks, i ended up on a running adventure this weekend.
it started off on saturday in search of the berlin vital fair, by the convention center all the way west somewhere i never had any intention of going. we’d obviously gotten out of the metro at the wrong place so we had the chance to see lots of strange sculptures and the rundfunkturm on the way there. who knew berlin had its own little eiffel tower?
inside halls 20 and 21 a, there were massage chairs, a pasta lounge, a martial arts exhibition, and sales on all types of running gear imaginable. and finally a highly guarded area for race number distribution. an evil lady informed me: begleitung stays outside! since i was only running the 3.5k fun run, it was kind of second class citizenship treatment. i didn’t even get safety pins for my number.
there were lots of foreigners saying lots of foreign sounding things. like so where’s the YOU-Bahn?
on race day, same as always. pot smokers in the YOU-Bahn but lots of other pro-decked out would-be runners. i’m amazed that so many people can run 21 kilometers. after being outrun by the little kiddie section of the fun run and collecting my snazzy completion prizes, i jetted to kilometer 17 with my homemade cardboard sign and enjoyed the musical encouragement by the tempelhofer ufer drummers. later on, at the finish line, there were so many people with cups of beer i assumed that the race was giving it out free. (well it is germany…) these were some in shape people.
in line skaters, power walkers, runners, and people in wheelchairs were all out on a sunny sunday to get their move on and to support the Arche Friedrichshain social project which received 1 euro per participant.
nothing better than running down a completely traffic free unter den linden on a spring day. just can’t beat that.
