welle

bad translations

a clip of dirk nowitzki‘s season opener game was on the news the other day. the camera panned into the crowd where a woman was standing with a huge hand painted sign. the uneven lettering read: Dirk, Welle zu mir!

welle can mean wave. as in the noun, wave. a wave in the ocean, a microwave. zu can mean to. put it together with mir and some primitive online translation program came up with "wave to me" which was then immortalized in fingerpaint. unfortunately welle zu mir makes no sense really. this sign was waved about on national tv for the amusement of german basketball fans everywhere.

maybe this means my german is getting better.
